On X-UA-Compatible

Tuesday, 22 January 2008

I started to write a long post about why Microsoft’s proposal to fix web standards with a proprietary meta tag / header is both utterly futile and offensive to developers that care about web standards. Mike Davies, a fellow Yahoo! and one of the best guys you could hope to meet, has said everything I wanted to say - much more eloquently than I tend to be when ranting, I might add - in his End of line Internet Explorer article.

The biggest barrier to Microsoft adopting web standards is Microsoft’s own clients, or rather Microsoft’s promise to them of backwards compatibility. They have a plan to solve this, but it demands that web developers sacrifice the future compatibility of their sites.

Having spent most of the evening reading various blog posts on this debacle, it’s interesting to see how Microsoft have managed to divide the opinions of leading members the web standards community so fiercely. I wonder who might benefit from such a situation?

Link bait is poisonous - don’t bite

Monday, 03 September 2007

Yet another blatant link bait article has popped up bashing Adobe Flex, from (surprise surprise) a company that has invested a lot of time and energy creating AJAX widgets. Please, if you have to respond to this type of article, don’t link to it - they just want eyeballs on their website. Personally, I got angry for a bit, but i couldn’t muster the energy to create a counter post. You’ll never change their minds, and no sane developer would take their leaky arguments seriously anyway.

Heading out to San Fancisco, need suggestions

Friday, 30 March 2007

I’m finally getting the opportunity to fly out to the US for three weeks in April to work at Yahoo’s Sunnyvale campus. I’m probably going to stay in the Crowne Plaza on Union Square in San Francisco (unless anyone has other suggestions) and commute to Sunnyvale on Yahoo’s swanky wifi-enabled shuttle. Since I’ll be on my own out there, I’m looking for suggestions of places to visit and things to see in the evenings and at weekends.

I’m putting my life in your hands. If you were in San Francisco for 3 weeks, what would you see/do in the evenings?

Wanted: 12 new web developers at Yahoo! London & Paris

Monday, 08 January 2007

It’s that time of year again. The holidays are over and you drudge back to your boring 9 ’till 5 job with your mind firmly fixed on that new year’s resolution: get a new job. Well, now’s your chance.

Yahoo! are looking for 12 new top-notch web developers to join the teams in London (8 people) and Paris (4 people). You’ll need very strong HTML, CSS and JavaScript skills, a good knowledge of PHP, be passionate about web standards and generally want to work for one of the best frickin’ companies on the planet (well, I think so anyway). You’ll get to play with some of the best people in the industry (Christian Heilmann and Drew McLellan among other industry super-stars) and work on some of the most exciting projects. Sales job? Me? Well, maybe just a little ;)

If you’re interested or if you have any questions drop me an email with your details and I’ll pass them along.
