Heading out to San Fancisco, need suggestions

Friday, 30 March 2007

I’m finally getting the opportunity to fly out to the US for three weeks in April to work at Yahoo’s Sunnyvale campus. I’m probably going to stay in the Crowne Plaza on Union Square in San Francisco (unless anyone has other suggestions) and commute to Sunnyvale on Yahoo’s swanky wifi-enabled shuttle. Since I’ll be on my own out there, I’m looking for suggestions of places to visit and things to see in the evenings and at weekends.

I’m putting my life in your hands. If you were in San Francisco for 3 weeks, what would you see/do in the evenings?

Flash Accessibility workshop

Wednesday, 14 March 2007

Niqui Merret is running a one-day Flash Accessibility workshop in Brighton on the 12th April 2007.

Accessibility in the online world has come a long way over the last few years. It is regrettable, however, that the guidelines and standards that have been developed ignore certain technologies such as Flash. This leaves an increasing number of developers who are aware of the importance of creating accessible Flash content without the resources to do so easily. To fill this void, I have developed a one day workshop on creating Flash experiences that are accessible for audiences with different needs.

This promises to be a really valuable workshop, even if you’ve seen Niqui talk about accessibility before (or are planning to at the next LFPUG meet-up). There’s nothing like getting some hands-on experience and I urge anyone developing Flash content to sign up.

If you’re interested, see Flash Accessibility workshop @ niquimerret.com for pricing and sign-up information.

Yahoo! ActionScript 3.0 API libraries

Wednesday, 07 March 2007

The brand new Yahoo! ActionScript 3.0 API libraries are now available from the Yahoo! Flash Developer Network. This includes API libraries for Answers, Weather, Search, Upcoming and a brand new Yahoo! Maps AS3 Communication Kit that allows you to use Yahoo! Maps from a Flex 2 / ActionScript 3.0 project.

The libraries come complete with documentation and sample applications for you to get your teeth into, so there’s no excuse for not getting stuck in.

Incidentally, if you’re wondering why Flickr was left out of the above list it’s because Adobe already has a perfectly good ActionScript 3.0 Flickr library.
